The Durham Performing Arts Center will soon be a reality!

getoneshot.jpg

North Carolina will have a new live entertainment theater like no other.  After years of discussion and planning, the design phase of the DPAC was completed in February 2006.  Construction began in September of 2006 and will finish in November 2008.  A 10th anniversary production of Rent will begin the season next January, followed by Fiddler on the Roof in March, Legally Blonde The Musical in April and The Color Purple, which closed on Broadway Feb. 24th, 2008, after 910 performances, in May.  Meanwhile, the long-running smash Wicked, which opened on Broadway in late 2003 and has been touring the continent since 2005, has been confirmed as the main attraction for the 2009-2010 series. The excitement and anticipation for the Durham and surrounding communities continue to grow as the project nears completion.  You can check the progress of the construction at View the Skanska USA DPAC webcam .  This venue is specifically designed to present the biggest shows on tour.  The Durham Performing Arts Center (DPAC) puts you close to the stage, with no seat further than 135 feet.  The DPAC will feature world-class performers, spacious seating, state-of-the-art sound and lighting and convenient parking.  DPAC allows you to experience live performances in an entirely new way.  The new venue is slated to open in December 2008.  Season Tickets are currently on sale.  We will keep you posted as information becomes available.

New Farmers Market May Come to Chapel Hill

Published by Jodi Bakst under Chapel Hill, Farmers Market

The Chapel Hill Downtown Partnership, local farmers and the Town’s Parks and Recreation Department are working to establish an afternoon farmers’ market on top of the Wallace Parking Deck this spring. Organizers say the proposed market, which would follow the models of farmers’ markets in Carrboro, Hillsborough and Fearrington Village, would support the partnership’s goal of increasing downtown traffic. In addition to the fresh produce, flowers, meats and other farmers’ market products to be sold, organizers are also considering featuring live music and entertainment, as well as offering downtown business and restaurants the opportunity to sell their products.

Orange County to Vote on Transfer Tax in May

Published by Jodi Bakst under Transfer Tax

The Orange County Board of Commissioners recently voted unanimously to put a 0.4 percent land transfer tax on the May primary ballot. Dozens of people at the meeting spoke in opposition to to the transfer tax.   tax. The other revenue option being considered by the Commissioners was a 0.25 percent sales tax increase. According to a poll recently conducted for the County, when asked which tax they would support, 48 percent of respondents said they would support the sales tax compared to only 32 percent for the transfer tax. Nevertheless, the Commissioners placed only the transfer tax on the ballot. It is important to note that the transfer tax is fee placed on home sellers.  Sellers already pay a transfer tax of $2/$1000 of the purchase price.  This measure could increase that tax to as much as $6/$1000 of the purchase price.  Realtors in the area are opposed to this tax because we feel the County needs to do a better job of increasing the commercial tax base rather than placing further tax burden on home sellers.
